What is the Eastside?

Map of King CountyThe Eastside is defined, and earned its nickname “The Eastside”, by one of Washington’s most beloved features: Lake Washington. Situated in King County and on the eastside of Lake Washington, the Eastside is comprised of a variety of cities in the geographical area and the primary cities are Kirkland, Redmond and Bellevue.

At one time the Eastside was comprised of farm land, open country and coal mines. In 1873, Erasmus Smithers discovered coal near Renton, which sparked one of the greatest booms in the area outside of the rich and bustling logging industry. When people think of the Eastside today, or King County for that matter, coal is one of the last ideas to pop in their heads. Today, the Eastside is quite different from the 1800’s and is now one of the fastest growing areas in King County, which is due in part to high tech employers establishing themselves in the area.

Major Eastside Employers

The Eastside has become synomous with the term “high tech”. Companies like Microsoft and Nintendo America have made their home here (Redmond) because of the abundance of high tech workers. Employers like Microsoft and Nintendo America have shaped the Eastside into a very affluent area that still has a normal, down to earth appeal.

Eastside scenary and topography

As it was stated earlier, the Eastside’s most prominent feature is Lake Washington. As Washington’s second largest lake, Lake Washington is a site to be seen on a sunny, or stormy, day with all the sail and power boats and beautiful homes that dot the shoreline. Another major part of the Eastside scenery is its proiximty to the Cascade Mountain Range. Nestled in the foothills, the Eastside is a just a short drive to Interstate 90 that leads mountain goers through the heart of the Cascade Moutain Range.
